When we think about paint, the first thing that comes to mind is colour, style, or design. Rarely do we think about what gets lost along the way. Yet in every painting project, a portion of paint never makes it to the wall. This wastage is the silent cost of human error-often unnoticed, but always adding up.

Understanding Paint Waste in Construction

In most construction projects, some level of paint waste is considered unavoidable. Studies suggest that between five and ten per cent of paint typically goes unused or is lost during application. Sometimes the waste is even higher, depending on site conditions and work practices. Overspray, uneven application, or simply preparing more paint than required are common reasons.

These figures may not sound alarming at first, but on large projects, the impact is significant. Thousands of litres of paint can be lost across a single development, quietly eating into budgets and timelines.

Overspray and Leftover Paint

One of the biggest contributors to paint waste is overspray. When too much paint is applied, it settles on filters, equipment, or the floor instead of the wall. In some industries, such as automotive painting, leftover paint can account for up to one-fifth of total usage. Factories using traditional spraying methods sometimes report losses as high as 30 to 40 per cent because of poor transfer efficiency.

Leftover paint is another hidden issue. Open tins or partially used containers often dry out or become unusable before they can be applied. What starts as an attempt to stay prepared for touch-ups frequently turns into wasted stock.

Why It Matters

Every drop of wasted paint carries three kinds of cost. The most obvious is financial. Even a small percentage of loss translates into large sums on big projects. Then there is the environmental impact. Disposing of unused paint and cleaning materials often means sending waste to landfills or requiring special treatment. Finally, there is the operational burden. Reordering, remixing, or correcting errors adds time and disrupts already tight schedules.

Where Human Effort Falls Short

Human painters work with skill and experience, but they are also subject to limitations. Estimating the exact amount of paint needed is rarely an exact science. Fatigue over long hours can affect the consistency of strokes, leading to uneven coats that require additional material to correct. Environmental factors, such as heat or humidity, can also necessitate adjustments that don’t always go as planned. The result is more waste, even with the best of intentions.

How Robotics Changes the Equation

Robotic painting systems such as MYRO are designed to cut down this silent cost by delivering precision that human hands cannot maintain over long periods. By controlling spray patterns, pressure, and distance with accuracy, robotics ensures that paint is applied evenly and efficiently. Transfer rates improve, meaning more paint reaches the wall instead of being lost in the process.

Automation also makes batching more accurate. Instead of mixing large amounts of paint “just in case,” robots work with exact quantities, leaving little room for leftovers. Most importantly, robots don’t tire or lose focus, so every wall receives the same level of quality finish from start to end.

Towards a More Efficient Future

Reducing paint waste is not only about saving money. It is about building more sustainable practices in construction and manufacturing. Less waste means less environmental harm, fewer reworks, and greater confidence in project outcomes.

By combining human creativity with robotic precision, the industry can move from accepting waste as usual to treating efficiency as standard. MYRO represents that shift, transforming paint from a resource often taken for granted into one used with purpose and accuracy.
